About
How we choose what we sell
Maison Presse started from a small frustration: it is genuinely hard to buy a good table lamp.
Not an expensive one — those are easy to find. A good one. Something with a glaze that reads as hand-finished rather than sprayed, a shade that softens light rather than aiming it, and a cord switch positioned where your hand actually goes. The large retailers carry hundreds of lamps and almost none of them have been looked at closely by anyone.
So the whole business is built around looking closely.
What gets in
Every piece has to pass the same four tests before we will carry it.
It has to hold up in use, not just in a photograph. A linen throw that looks right styled over a chair and disappoints in the hand does not make it. Neither does a basket that collapses the moment you empty it.
The making has to show. A glaze that pools slightly differently on every piece. A handle worked into a weave rather than stitched on afterward. These are the details that separate something you notice from something you do not.
It has to survive the trip. We do not carry fragile or oversized pieces, because a beautiful thing that arrives broken is not a beautiful thing. Lamps ship double-boxed with bases packed separately from shades.
We have to be able to explain the choice. Every product page has one sentence explaining why that specific piece is here. If we cannot write that sentence honestly, it does not get listed.
What we are not
We are not a showroom and we are not trying to furnish your whole house. The collection is deliberately small and it will stay that way. Pieces rotate out when something better turns up.
We also do not do countdown timers, manufactured scarcity, or “only 2 left” banners. If you are here, you are probably already looking for something specific. The job is to help you decide, not to hurry you.
Where we are
Maison Presse ships from Canada. Orders over C$125 ship free, everything comes with 30 days to change your mind, and if something arrives wrong we will make it right without an argument.
